Fungi That Eats Plastic?

With the amount of plastic waste that is in our world, researchers have begun to look for alternative solutions to plastic waste.

Samantha Jenkins made an accidental discovery when a research project over fungi resulted in one of the mushrooms eating its way through the plastic sponge.

Biohm is using this discovery to develop the fungus strain in order to make it even more efficient at digesting plastic materials. This strain of fungi is being tested on PET and polyurethane plastics.

“You put in plastic, the fungi eat the plastic, the fungi make more fungi, and then from that you can make biomaterials…for food, or feedstocks for animals, or antibiotics”.
