The Ocean Cleanup partnership with AP Moller-Maersk has been extended

AP Moller-Maersk has extended their partnership with The Ocean Cleanup. The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization, is developing advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. Their goal is to achieve a 90% reduction in ocean plastic. Maersk provides marine offshore support and end-to-end supply chain management services for The Ocean Cleanup’s ocean and river projects. To promote a circular economy, the plastic collected will be reused to create something new. The first plastic catch from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch has been reused into designer sunglasses! The materials used to make the sunglasses are as follows:

Frame: The Ocean Cleanup plastic – 95% recycled plastic certified from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – high-density polyethylene

Lenses: Polycarbonate

Hinges, Brand, and QR Code Plates: Recycled stainless steel

Case: Recycled System 001 a.k.a. Wilson, High-density polyethylene

Pouch: Recycled PET bottles

As of January 14th, 2021, The Ocean Cleanup has 224,980 football fields worth of ocean cleaning funded, 45% of their goal (their goal is 500,000)! The Ocean Cleanup projects to be able to remove 90% of ocean plastic by 2040.
